The Miniature Dachshund
From initial observation a miniature dachshund is the comical, long and short dog, with a big bark and unique character. Betty fits all of this criteria.
The official description, from The Kennel Club, is not too dissimilar, although slightly more diplomatic (information below is taken directly from The Kennel Club):
General Appearance -
Moderately long in proportion to height, with no exaggeration. Compact, well-muscled body, with enough ground clearance, not less than one quarter of the height at the withers, to allow free movement. Height at the withers should be half the length of the body, measured from breastbone to the rear of thigh. Bold, defiant carriage of head and intelligent expression.
Characteristic -
Intelligent, lively, courageous to the point of rashness, obedient. Especially suited to going to ground because of low build, very strong forequarters and forelegs. Long, strong jaw, and immense power of bite and hold. Excellent nose, persevering hunter and tracker. Essential that functional build, size and proportions ensure working ability.
Temperament -
Faithful, versatile and good tempered.
Betty is certainly full or character, generally good tempered - except when with workmen, and intelligent (which can possibly be displayed as stubborn!). But she is definitely not a good hunter, in fact, she hates holes and seems to lack the ability to use her nose, unless it’s for my food! We also won’t go into her proportions…they are somewhat to be desired, but she definitely is a dachshund on all other accounts.
Most of all she’s the epitome of a woman’s best friend, she’s been with me through lots, especially lockdown - having to take her out on daily walks kept me sane throughout, she is a constant companion - especially to the bathroom. And she’s always up for a cuddle, I love her.
